I had the super great privilege to be service sister at BYU's Women Conference this Spring.
My great friend Koni was a helper in picking a team of ladies to be over the Madsen Recital Hall and she chose me to help out.
It was SO much fun!
At first I was a little disappointed to not be able to actually go to classes but it turned out that I was the winner all around in how I was fed that day.
Our main job was to be HAPPY!
Our second job was to serve the "one" and make a difference in someone's life by helping them in any way we could.
I did a lot of pointing to where the bathroom was.
(thus being called a Pointer Sister.)
I held a stick that said, "end of line here."
I gave out a lot of programs.
I helped a few older women carry things and find a seat in the recital hall.
I was served a yummy box lunch.
I talked to a lot of really nice ladies and even saw some friends.
I had a few ladies comment on how happy the service sisters were.
And mostly I had tons of people ask if our aprons were being sold somewhere because they wanted an apron just like mine. It was pretty cute and I felt like Mary Poppins in it.
An added bonus for me was being able to see Colleen who sang in BYU Women's choir with me, in that very room we were working in. I haven't seen her since our Freshman year.
Here's Colleen, me and Koni.
All the ladies who worked in our room were SO SUPER nice. It was even a little sad to say good-bye to them at the end of the day because we had such a great time together serving.
This day was a perfect example of the principle that those who give the service are more blessed than those who receive the service, because I felt VERY blessed.
On Thursday while I was working I saw several women who walked into the room I was working in. They looked so pretty but also had a great Spirit around them. As they walked in I knew they were important ladies. At first I thought they were presenters but as I walked into the room later I recognized them as the General Young Women's Presidency, Primary Presidency and Relief Society of the church and some of each of the board members.
I was overwhelmed with how they carried themselves and the strong Spirit that was all around them.
On Friday all 9 of those women from those presidencies did a presentation in the Marriott Center. I felt strongly that I needed to hear what they said. Here's what I wrote in my notebook before their presentation started:
"I saw several of these women yesterday including many board members. I saw and felt a great Spirit with them. I thought that they must be important women. Now I am looking at all of them here in the Marriott Center. They are radiant and beautiful; perfect, cute hair, snappy dressers, happy smiles. They are all skinny. They obviously take care of themselves physically and spiritually. I want to be like ALL of them. They are strong but not without their own difficulties and trials. I feel a lot of love for them just sitting here looking at them. They are Women of God. I want to be a Woman of God too!!"
Here is a little highlight from all of their talks as they focused on the Atonement, grace and our trials.
*The world would have us believe that our trials are unfair. *We are given tailor-made trials so that we will yoke ourselves to the Lord.
*If we see and know our weaknesses it only means we are drawing nearer to the Savior. Living the Gospel the best we can is our ultimate goal.
*Despair does not look good on us. The Atonement does. No time or energy for pitty-parties look good on us. I'm allergic to despair. I am choosing to wear the Atonement. It looks good on me as I access grace, repentance, love, redemption.
*I am attracted to hope, peace, the prophets voice, light, strength, energy, scriptures, work, triumph, virtue etc.
*We receive the strength to endure our trials as we rely on Grace.
*Avoid DROUT in your physical reserves. Avoid DOUBT in your Spiritual reserves.
*Are you going to be like Chicken Little or The Little Red Hen?
